Yoga is for everyone

B. K. S. Iyengar developed a method of yoga that is known worldwide for its precision, clarity, and depth. Through decades of dedicated practice, study, and teaching, Guruji made the ancient teachings of yoga accessible to ordinary people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. His approach emphasises alignment, awareness, sequencing, and the intelligent use of props, allowing each student to experience the benefits of yoga safely and progressively.

 

Iyengar Yoga is far more than physical exercise. It is a penetrative and evolving practice in which body, breath, mind, and intelligence become increasingly integrated through experience and sustained practice. The method encourages deep observation and self-study, cultivating steadiness, sensitivity, and clarity of mind. As understanding matures, the practice continues to reveal new layers of insight and transformation.

Guruji’s extensive study of Yoga Sutras of Patanjali profoundly shaped his teaching. He brought the philosophical teachings of yoga into practical experience through the discipline of āsana and prāṇāyāma. In Iyengar Yoga, practice becomes a meditation in action — a way to quiet the fluctuations of the mind, develop discernment, and move towards greater balance and inner freedom.

A central aspect of Iyengar Yoga is that yoga is for everyone. Whether young or old, flexible or stiff, strong or recovering from illness, the practice can be adapted to suit the individual. Through careful guidance and the intelligent use of props, students are supported to practice according to their own capacity while progressing with stability, confidence, and understanding.

ABOUT THE TEACHER

SIRPA GARDNER

Certified level 2 Iyengar Yoga teacher

I have practiced Iyengar Yoga since 2006 and started teaching as a certified Iyengar yoga teacher in  2016.  Before I began teaching yoga full time I practiced as a Registered Nurse for over 30 years. Health and wellbeing has been part of my life all my adulthood. I completed masters degree of Health Sciences 2002 at Turku university in Finland.  Yoga and teaching yoga is a journey, learning never ends it just deepens.  I continue studying  yoga with the senior Iyengar yoga teachers in New Zealand, Australia and in U S A via online tutoring and in organised Workshops and I attend to regular teacher development  courses. I hav visited Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune India. This method is of practicing yoga is inspiring and joyful. To inspire and to be inspired by others is my goal when teaching yoga. I will always continue being a student of yoga and wish my students to become students of this beautiful art as well.
